A Head Full of Monkees

Friday night I was able to take in The Monkees 45th Anniversary Tour (or the 25th anniversary of the 20th anniversary tour) and loved seeing my buddy, Micky, having a ball with his old cohorts. I had thought that maybe it was going to be the same old same old that they have always done when they reunite but this show was truly great. It was a lot different watching a Monkees concert being a member of the "inner circle" and it was a great feeling to know I was watching friends up on stage. Anyway, I thought I would throw you a generous helping of Monkees stuff so here goes:
RHINO Handmade put out an amazing box set for HEAD last year that featured not only the original soundtrack in both MONO and STEREO but also had a bunch of great alternate mixes and unreleased items. It was great to get the "official" version of a lot of these items but there were still a lot that they left off. Two bootlegs that were released long before RHINO's box set contained not only the items released in the set but also a lot of others that didn't make the cut. Here are those tracks that didn't make the RHINO version from those two bootlegs. Here are "Head Shots" and "HEAD Deluxe". Enjoy!

Hi,

It seems that Rapidshare has made it no longer possible to download unless you sign up. Am I missing something? Do you have these available anywhere else?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi,

These downloads are very much appreciated. And, the free download is still there but you have to wait over 2 hours in-between downloads! PLEASE! Please switch to Megaupload or some other file sharing company.

I know. Rapidshare has really gone downhill. I have to wait just as long as you guys and they are my files! I'm currently weighing my options and checking other sites out.

Thank you so much for that. I look forward to what you post, we have much the same loves, especially The Monkees. I am very envious that you know them personally.

All waiting aside, these other collections of leftovers related to Head are dandy, Dartman!

Among the many highlights was the (presumed) early version Of "If I Ever Get Back to Saginaw Again" with Davy's vocals. The laid back arrangement is so atypical of the average Davy song, it's a breath of fresh air over his most overwrought ballads!

Thanks for posting!

Dear Mr. Dartman,

Wow! These Monkees Head takes are great! Thank you so much.

I was wondering if you know or could find out the information about this one Head "song" that has never attributed to anyone - I'm speaking about the "Things Go Better With Coke" jingle used during Micky's desert/Coke machine sequence. I think it could be the Monkees playing with Micky singing, but with a sped-up voice or it might be his sister or, who knows, session singers/musicians.

Any insight to this mystery would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks again,

Brad

Brad - As far as I know, the Coke jingle is simply the Coke jingle from that time period. They basically just used the one from Coke's ad campaign. I don't think any Monkees or Monkee relatives have anything to do with that track.

Hi Mr. Dartman,

I am a Coke jingle collector and have almost 600 Things Go Better With Coke jingles and although I can't say for certain, I believe that the Head version is unique.

Thanks,

I'm still getting much enjoyment from all these Head outtakes, Dartman!

On a Monkees mp3-related note, for anyone who hunts for rare cover versions of Monkee songs, I stumbled upon a rarity (to me, at least) available as a download at Amazon that I'd like to give a "shout out" about for those who don't have it.

From a collection called After Tonight: Ember Beat Vol. 3 1966-67, be sure to check out the version of "[Theme From] The Monkees" recorded by the Peenuts (not a typo)! Apparently, this was released as a single in Great Britain and went nowhere.

thanks! this is great. Any chance of any of the other Deluxe Editions? I remember seeing them awhile back but haven't seen them online again. Would love to get a copy!

(I'm speaking of the bootleg versions of course, not the official releases which I already own.)

Thanks!
