The Muffs Head To Outer Space

I've talked about The Muffs before. They are one of my all time favorite bands and I have the utmost pleasure of having lead singer/songwriter Kim Shattuck as one of my good friends. In fact, her and I recorded one of my original songs back in September. It's been sitting on her computer ever since. Then I got the e-mail a couple of days ago: Kim's hard drive died and the whole thing got lost. Oh well. I do have a rough mix of what was already layed down so at least I have something. Anyway, here's a great video of Kim and the other two Muffs, Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald from a Drew Carey HBO special. It's hard to believe but it was taped in 1997. Over ten years ago. Try Not To Get De-Rezzed

A couple of days back I watched a classic Disney film that I hadn't seen in years. TRON. When I was a kid and TRON first came out, I wanted to see it more than anything. I never got to see it on the big screen but I read the novel adaptation about three times, loving it more each time. I think I finally saw it when it hit HBO and loved it. When they came out with the big restoration DVD set a few years back I came very close to buying it but to this day have not. Maybe I'll go get it one day this week. Anyway, if you, like me, do not have the DVD at your fingertips, you can always listen to todays sharity,"The Story of TRON". As with The Story of Star Wars and the other Star Wars story albums, and the Raiders of The Lost Ark story record, this is the actual film put on a record. (a popular approach before the days of home video and DVD). Remember, at the time of TRON's release, home video was just becoming a tangible means for the average joe so this was still a viable way to get the enjoyment of the film in your own house. At the time of the original posting of this, I was playing in the pit orchestra for a local high school version of "The Little Shop of Horrors". I love the musical but nothing compares to the original 1959 Roger Corman film version! It is amazing and features great performances from Jonathon Haze, Jackie Joseph, Dick Miller and a then-unknown actor by the name of Jack Nicholson. The soundtrack is by Fred Katz and is jsut as amazing as the film itself! It was released on Rhino records in 1984 but alas, is currently out-of-print. Here is that soundtrack! Oh, by the way, don't feed the plants!

Amazing Commercials of Yesteryear

After watching these clips I thought to myself, how come commercials aren't this great now?! You would think they would attempt these cool special effects now with all the CGI we have going on. What do you think?

Edd Byrnes Gets Kookie

Schadenfreudian Therapy posted selections from the soundtrack to the television series "77 Sunset Strip" which makes me want to be part of the action. One of the cast members of "77 S.S." was a fellow by the name of Edd Byrnes. Fans of "Grease" know him as Vince Fontaine. Fans of the Love Boat know him as many different characters. And fans of Sunset Strip know him as Gerald Lloyd "Kookie" Kookson III. Kookie was famous for his duck tail hair-do and his constant combing of it. It became such a phenomenon that Edd Brynes and Connie Stevens recorded a novelty number entitled "Kookie, Kookie Lend Me Your Comb." The song was such a big hit, a complete album of "Kookie" related songs was released by Warner Brothers. Incidentally, singing the female parts on all but the "Lend Me Your Comb" track is none other than Joanie Summers, who would have a hit of her own with "Johnny Get Angry". One final note: the character of Gerald Lloyd "Kookie" Kookson III was not originally a part of the series regulars. Edd Byrnes starred in the pilot in the role of a continuously hair-combing serial killer in the pilot, Girl on the Run, and was so popular as a result that he was brought back the following week as a regular cast member in a different role! At the beginning of the episode which followed Girl, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. broke the fourth wall with the announcement:"We previewed this show, and because Edd Byrnes was such a hit we decided that Kookie and his comb had to be in our series. So this week, we'll just forget that in the pilot he went off to prison to be executed." Here's Edd Byrnes, Connie Stevens and Joanie Summers having a ball with the full length "Kookie" album!
